NTROPSY OUTPUT 2 - HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
As regularly defined, adulthood is the period in the human life span where full physical and mental maturity has been attained. Adulthood according to Erikson, is divided into three subcategories. The first talks about the stage of early adulthood that covers the exploration of personal relationships. Here we explore how personal relationships gratify us and provide a sense of comitment and security.
Second, we have the middle adulthood which tells us whether or not we are productive — whether we feel that we have contributed to society or not. Hence, the argument of generativity over stagnation.
Lastly there is the late adulthood, the question of pride integrity & satisfaction or regrets and an endless string of ”what-ifs”.
Indeed, one must surpass a variety of stages to enable to truly develop. During the stage that we long to find the one who we intend to share the rest of our lives with — do we find not only the half we thought was missing, but also the half that was there all this time. One cannot love another without first learning how to love himself — and this is perhaps the key to self-identity. Once we grasp the entirety of our being do we start applying ourselves, to search the world for a meaningful purpose. The purpose may not come to all those who seek it, but the journey that comes before it is of equal value. It is only during the final stage of our lives do we look back and ponder whether or not the journey was worth taking. The period of thought and recollection that makes us ask ourselves, ”Was it all worth it?”.
